Shanna L. Baron, RN, MSN, FNP-C is a board-certified family nurse practitioner specializing in pediatric neurosurgery. Although the main focus of her practice is pediatric based, being a family nurse practitioner allows her to continue focusing her interests on the care of her pediatric patients with chronic illness as they age.
Prior to joining Long Island Neurosurgical Associates, P.C., Ms. Baron worked for two years as the Assistant Director of Nursing at Cohen Children’s Medical Center preceded by four years as a staff nurse in their Pediatric ICU. While in the Pediatric ICU, she worked closely with Dr. Schneider and Dr. Mittler, caring for their patients. Prior to working in Cohen Children’s Medical Center, she worked as a staff nurse at St. Mary’s Hospital for Children. Ms. Baron graduated from SUNY Downstate Medical Center with a Bachelor of Science degree, and received a Masters of Science in Nursing and Nurse Practitioner in Family Health degree from Molloy College. She is a member of the American Association of Neuroscience Nursing.
In addition to caring for pediatric inpatients before and after surgery she also assesses outpatients, coordinates and reviews tests and imaging, and provides education to patients and their families. She serves as a liaison for all patients undergoing neurosurgical procedures serving as a resource person in order to facilitate care and ensure the best results for patients. Prior to surgery, she provides pre-operative guidance. Additionally, she rounds on patients daily during their inpatient surgery and recovery, and also manages their ongoing follow-up care.
As an integrative health care practitioner, Ms. Baron is certain that the best health outcomes are a result of both great care and a well-informed patient and family. Together with Dr. Mittler, Dr. Schneider, and Dr. Lefkowitz they take pride in their comprehensive team approach to patient care.
